"Hanging from the Earth" is one of the foundational concepts of the Seki Method developed by Minako Seki.
It serves as a physical and mental framework designed to help dancers redefine their relationship with gravity, release tension, and move with organic efficiency.
In reaction to the gravity force, we experience that in our reality everything is falling down in the direction of the center of the earth. Like the objects, when we walk each step is falling in to the middle of earth. Experiencing how easy is to walk, we can feel this effortless sensation in all our movements. By using gravity, we can generate all movements as they would come out of the relaxed body; using it as a powerful impulse and motor of movement. We are all hanging from the earth.
During this workshop, you will go deep into the base of Minako's work, practicing her overcrossing concepts of Waterbag, Tails, Falling Bouncing, and Points.
Here is how Minako Seki begins her book "Seki Method Basics":
Once we have all gathered in a circle and introduced ourselves, I begin my workshops by showing students an iron ball hanging from a piece of string. This is the starting point for understanding and embodying weight as a human being standing on this Earth. Our first exercises are foundational standing positions, with an awareness of Earth, sky and gravity, together with the image of the iron ball. I also introduce students to the Tanden or energetic centre of the body as well as ways of working with breath, movement and voice to 'clean' the body energetically.
