6.05.2017 Premiere of the dance piece ” La Fiesta ”
a collaboration with the worldwide contemporary flamenco dancer Israel Galván and company.
Residence and World Premiere at St. Pölten Festspielhaus in Austria
LA FIESTA describes the hour after the actual flamenco performance, when the bailaoras and bailaores improvise with their musicians in something akin to a jam session. Israel Galván brings the electric atmosphere of these sessions to the stage in his new production. Flamenco is not just a form of artistic expression, but a way of life. Together with flamenco dancer and choreographer Patricia Caballero, Galván develops a combination of dance, song, music and farce in which nine protagonists come together for the energy-packed fiesta.

ISRAEL GALVÁN was born in Seville in 1973. He underwent classical flamenco training but developed a contemporary approach after joining the Compañía Andaluza de Danza in 1994. He has since become known as a revolutionary of flamenco. Galván has presented his choreographies and performances around the world, garnering numerous awards, including the New York Dance and Performance Bessie Award in 2012. He is Associate Artist at the Théâtre de la Ville de Paris and the Mercat de les Flors de Barcelona.
Considered by some an enfant terrible and by others an icon of the avant-garde, Israel Galván has deconstructed the traditional forms of flamenco to add individual elements and assemble them anew. What remains are the precisely measured rhythm and the exact, percussive footwork of flamenco. Galván replaces the soft, gliding gestures of the traditionally sinuous body language of flamenco with cool, angular dramatics, while also teasingly subverting the machismo of the dance.
